What is the history of Antiparos?
Antiparos, called Oliaros in antiquity, records human settlement from 5000 BC, when Neolithic farmers lived on the islet of Saliagos. Venetian lords ruled from 1207 and built the castle around 1440, Ottoman rule began in 1537 and Antiparos joined Greece in 1832.
Saliagos, a remnant of the land link that joined Antiparos to Paros until the Byzantine period, holds the oldest known settlement in the Cyclades. Colin Renfrew and John Davies Evans excavated it in 1964 and 1965, recovering the marble figurine called the Fat Lady of Saliagos and more than 25,000 obsidian artefacts, with the raw obsidian traced to Milos, 60 km away, and to Gyali in the Dodecanese. Strabo, Pliny the Elder and Virgil recorded the island as Oliaros.
Marco Sanudo, founder of the Duchy of Naxos, took the island in 1207, and from then on it supplied 30 oarsmen to the ducal galleys. In the 15th century pirates used the coves of the strait, then called the Strait of 14 Feet, as a base until Giovanni Loredan married Maria Sommaripa, raised the castle and settled new families at his own expense. Raiders from Kefalonia and Mani sacked the island in 1794 and kidnapped the daughter of the Venetian vice-consul. Our Antiparos history guide follows each period in detail, and the Antiparos Cave keeps its own record of visitors:
- Archilochus: the lyric poet of Paros is credited with an inscription inside the cave.
- Marquis de Nointel: the French ambassador to the Ottoman court spent 3 days in the cave and celebrated Christmas mass there in 1673, under the light of 100 candles and 400 lamps.
- Orlov fleet: Russian forces held the island from 1770 to 1774 and shipped stalactites to the Hermitage Museum.
- Lord Byron: the English poet carved his name into the rock.
- King Otto: the first king of modern Greece left an inscription from his 1840 visit with Queen Amalia.
What is the Kastro of Antiparos?
The Kastro of Antiparos is the Venetian fortified settlement in Antiparos town, built around 1440 by Giovanni Loredan: a square block of joined houses whose outer walls formed the defensive wall around a central round tower, entered through 1 gate on the south side.
Loredan raised the Kastro when he married Maria Sommaripa and received Antiparos as her dowry, and its plan follows the fortified villages that Latin lords built across the Cyclades between the 13th and 16th centuries. Inside the square, the first houses rose 3 storeys, each floor with its own door reached by an external staircase, and the Loredan coat of arms decorated the gate.
- Tower: the round central tower served in later centuries as a water tank, and bats circle it from dusk to dawn.
- Rimni: the narrow lane between the houses around the tower and the houses of the outer wall, the single route into the core of the settlement.
- Xopyrga: the rectangular ring of 24 single-storey houses built outside the south wing.
- Houses: 24 two-storey houses inside the walls and 16 in the outer zone, with 3 small churches and the old aqueduct between them.
- Church of Christ: the church that fills the northwest corner of the open space inside the walls.
The archaeological service approves every alteration, so the houses keep their original plan despite the loss of their upper floors, and houses on the outer face now open onto the main street as shops. The Kastro, the square and the fountain of the Chora appear in the 1960 film Madalena, shot entirely on Antiparos with Aliki Vougiouklaki. Our guide to Antiparos town covers the port, the main street and the lanes that lead up to the Kastro gate.
What is the sanctuary of Apollo on Despotiko, off Antiparos?
The sanctuary of Apollo on Despotiko is a 6th-century BC Archaic site on the uninhabited islet 700 metres southwest of Antiparos. Excavations begun by Yannos Kourayos in 1997 at Mantra have uncovered its buildings, 2 altars, 2 marble kouros heads and imports from Cyprus and Egypt.
Despotiko covers 7.754 square kilometres, rises to 188 metres and carried the ancient name Prepesinthos; a strait about 1 metre deep, with the islet of Tsimintiri in the middle, separates it from Antiparos. Theodore Bent surveyed the islet in 1884, Christos Tsountas excavated its Early Cycladic cemeteries in 1889, and Nikos Zafiropoulos found Doric temple members from around 500 BC at Zoumbaria and Mantra in 1959. The islet has stayed uninhabited since French pirates sacked it in 1675.
- Five-room building: a long building of 5 parallel rooms whose southern room held Archaic objects from East Ionia, Rhodes, Cyprus and Egypt.
- Kouros heads: 2 Archaic marble heads, found with the torso of a nude male statue.
- Hestia altar: a Classical marble altar inscribed to Hestia Isthmia, which names the headland as the Isthmus.
- Apollo sherds: pottery fragments inscribed with the name of Apollo, found in a 4-room building with a large stone altar.
Anastylosis work, the reassembly of fallen architectural members, runs alongside the excavation, and finds from the site are on display in the Archaeological Museum of Paros in Parikia. The whole islet has been a protected archaeological site since 2000 and lies within the Natura 2000 network, with Mediterranean monk seals in its shallow waters. Boats to Despotiko sail only from Antiparos, from the port of the Chora or from Agios Georgios opposite the islet, and summer excursion boats run daily to Livadi, the long sandy beach on its south coast.
Which villages make up Antiparos, and where do visitors stay?
Antiparos has 4 main settlements: the Chora, the northeastern port town; Agios Georgios, 11.5 km southwest facing Despotiko; Soros, 8 km south by sandy beaches; and inland Kampos, 4 km from town. The Chora holds the largest share of hotels and rooms.
- Chora: the seat of the municipality, built around the Kastro opposite Pounta on Paros, with the town hall, the island clinic and the stone square of Agia Marina.
- Agios Georgios: a seaside settlement on Despotiko Bay opposite the islet of Tsimintiri, and the departure point for boats to Despotiko.
- Soros: a coastal settlement east of Agios Georgios, known for its sandy beaches.
- Kampos: a farming valley north of Soros, set inland and away from the sea.
Agios Georgios entered the town plan in 1976 through a building cooperative of Athens goldsmiths and became a recognised settlement in 1991. Islanders in the resistance used the Agios Georgios area, behind the mountain of Antiparos, as a secret submarine base during the Second World War, and the chapel of Agios Georgios holds a memorial to the fighters of the National Resistance. Sea caves that locals call Epitafios lie southeast of the settlement and are reachable only by sea. Our Agios Georgios guide covers its beaches and the boat crossing to Despotiko.
The villages of Antiparos guide profiles each settlement and the drives between them. The Chora suits visitors without a vehicle, since the port, the Kastro, the bus stop and the town beaches lie within walking distance, and the where to stay on Antiparos guide compares the Chora, the beach areas and the campsite.
How do you get around Antiparos once you arrive?
Antiparos measures 11 km north to south and 4.5 km across, and 1 main road links the Chora with the cave and Agios Georgios. Municipal and private buses leave from Agia Marina square at the port, and rental firms hire cars, scooters, quads and bicycles.
- On foot: the port, the pedestrian main street, the Kastro and the town beaches lie within walking distance of each other.
- Bus: buses connect the port with the settlements, the beaches and the cave.
- Taxi: taxis serve the island alongside the buses.
- Car: hire cars from offices at and near the port reach the southern beaches and Agios Georgios.
- Scooter or quad: larger scooters and quads require a full driving licence, and rental offices also hire buggies.
- Bicycle: bicycles and walking are the 2 ways of moving around the historic centre of the Chora.
- Boat: summer excursion boats circle the island and cross to Despotiko.
The coastline of Antiparos runs 57 km. Road works opened a coastal road along the east coast through Apantima and Glyfa and a road to Livadia beach on the west coast, which link inland Kampos with both shores. The cave sits on the hill of Agios Ioannis, near the middle of the east side of the island.
Drivers bring vehicles across on the car ferry from Pounta on Paros, a crossing of under 10 minutes that runs 365 days a year; the getting to Antiparos guide covers the routes from Athens and Paros. The Antiparos car rental guide compares cars, scooters, quads and buggies and sets out the licence rules.
Antiparos or Paros: which island suits your trip?
Antiparos suits travellers who want 1 compact town, short drives and quiet evenings, while Paros suits travellers who want an airport, the larger towns of Parikia and Naoussa and nightclubs. Antiparos counted 1,265 residents at the 2021 census; Paros counted 14,520.
- Scale: Paros, the third-largest island of the Cyclades, measures 21 km by 16 km with 118.5 km of coastline, against 57 km of coastline on Antiparos.
- Pace: the smaller island centres on 1 town and 1 main road, while Paros spreads across the port towns of Parikia, Naoussa and Drios.
- Beaches: Antiparos offers long sandy stretches with calm, shallow water; Paros offers a larger number of beaches, including organised beaches and windsurfing and kitesurfing spots.
- Nightlife: Paros has bars and nightclubs centred on Naoussa; the smaller island spends its evenings in the tavernas and bars of the pedestrian main street.
- Access: Paros National Airport links Paros with Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Santorini and Mykonos, and the smaller island has no airport.
Both islands fit 1 trip, since the channel between them is under 2 km wide. Travellers based on Paros cross for a day of beaches, the Kastro and the cave, and travellers based on Antiparos cross back for Naoussa, Parikia and the airport. A stay of at least 1 night adds evenings in the Chora and the boat crossings from Agios Georgios to Despotiko.
The Antiparos vs Paros comparison weighs beaches, dining, nightlife and hotels side by side, and the Antiparos day trip from Paros plan covers the crossing, the Chora, the cave and the beaches in 1 day.
When is the best time to visit Antiparos?
The best time to visit Antiparos is June or September, when the sea holds 22.6°C to 24.1°C, the tavernas and beach bars are open and the crowds sit below the July and August peak. April and October suit walkers and quiet stays.
The meltemi shapes every summer plan on Antiparos. This dry northerly wind of the Aegean blows from late spring to mid-September, peaks in the afternoon, reaches force 7 to 8 on the Beaufort scale on its strongest days and can blow for days without a break. Sheltered east-coast bays such as Apantima stay calm when it blows, while Livadia on the exposed west side takes its full force.
- April: mild, green walking weather and a 16.7°C sea.
- Late spring: rooms and tavernas reopen, and the sea warms to 19.1°C.
- June: hot, dry days, a 22.6°C sea and room on the sand at Psaraliki and Soros.
- July and August: peak crowds, daytime highs in the high twenties and low thirties Celsius, and a 24.3°C to 24.9°C sea.
- September: a 24.1°C sea, full services and thinner crowds.
- October: shorter days, the first rain and a 21.9°C sea.
- November to March: cool, wet village life, closed seasonal hotels and a sea that drops to 16°C.
Crowds follow the Greek calendar: the week of the 15 August Dormition holiday marks the peak of the season, and September brings the same warm water to quieter beaches. From November to March the island returns to its 1,265 permanent residents, and the Pounta car ferry keeps Antiparos connected to Paros all year. The full calendar sits on our page on the best time to visit Antiparos.
How long do you need on Antiparos, and how do you plan the days?
Plan 3 days on Antiparos for the town, the cave, Soros and a boat to Despotiko, and 5 days to add Glyfa, Apantima and Faneromeni. A day trip from Paros covers the Kastro, one beach and dinner before the Pounta car ferry back.
Antiparos measures 11 km from north to south, so one base in the town serves every plan below. The local bus runs south to Soros and Agios Georgios, and the Antiparos beaches in these plans sit at set distances from the town: Panagia at 1 km, Glyfa at 3.5 km, Apantima at 7 km and Soros at 8 km. The road to the cave branches off just before Apantima, so the cave and an east-coast swim fit into one morning.
- 1 day: cross from Pounta, walk the lanes of the Kastro, swim at Panagia beach under its shade trees and stay in town for dinner.
- 3 days: spend day 1 in the town, day 2 at the cave and Soros beach with its shallow water and tavernas, and day 3 on a boat from Agios Georgios to Despotiko.
- 5 days: add a day at Glyfa beach and Apantima beach on the east coast, then a day at Faneromeni beach below its blue-domed chapel at the southern end of the island.
Carry water, food and shade to Glyfa and Faneromeni, because neither beach has a bar, a shop or sunbeds. Faneromeni sits 4 km beyond Soros on an unpaved track, a 20-minute drive from the town by car, scooter or quad, and rewards the trip with a small sea cave and snorkelling among the rocks. Apantima, by contrast, rents sunbeds and stays sheltered from the summer wind. Take the Despotiko boat in the morning, before the meltemi peaks in the afternoon. Our Antiparos itinerary sets out each plan day by day.
What and where do you eat on Antiparos?
Antiparos serves Cycladic taverna food: the day’s fish grilled with olive oil and lemon, octopus, fava and gouna, the sun-dried mackerel of Paros and Antiparos. Tavernas line the car-free main street of the town, the Soros bay and the Agios Georgios waterfront facing Despotiko.
Gouna is the signature meze of the island. Fishermen split a mackerel open, salt it, dry it in the sun and grill it over embers, and the tavernas serve it with lemon. The rest of the day’s catch goes on the grill with olive oil, lemon and herbs. The menus of Antiparos continue with grilled octopus, calamari, fava split-pea purée, tzatziki, Greek salad with tomato and feta, dolmades, stuffed tomatoes and peppers, fried courgettes, moussaka and charcoal-grilled pork and lamb skewers, with island cheeses and seasonal vegetables on the side.
- Antiparos town: tavernas and cafés along the car-free main street.
- Agios Georgios: fish tavernas on the southwest waterfront, facing Despotiko across a 700 m channel.
- Soros: beach tavernas behind the bay, serving fresh fish and Greek dishes.
- Panagia beach: a taverna behind the sand, 1 km south of the town.
Wine comes from the Paros PDO zone across the strait: the white is 100% Monemvasia, and the red blends at least 35% Mandilaria with Monemvasia. Monemvasia is a white grape that originated in Laconia in the Peloponnese and now grows mainly on Paros, and Malvasia Paros is a naturally sweet wine made from sun-dried Monemvasia grapes. What is nightlife like on Antiparos?
Nightlife on Antiparos is relaxed and runs late: bars and cafés ring the square beside the Venetian Kastro, beach bars serve drinks at Psaraliki and Soros, and the small music bars fill between midnight and 1 am, with no dress codes and no door selection.
The crowd gathers after dinner on the square at the end of the main street, beside the Kastro, the fortified settlement Giovanni Loredan built in 1440 with an outer ring of 24 two-storey houses. The small music bars away from the square get busy as it empties, the late spots in Antiparos town keep going until dawn in July and August, and the scene quietens at the start and end of the season.
- Sunset: the beach bar on Sifneiko, the west-coast beach 500 m from the main square.
- Daytime: beach bars with sunbeds and drinks at Psaraliki, a 10-minute walk south of the town, and at Soros.
- Evening: bars and cafés on the square beside the Kastro.
- After midnight: music bars and late spots on the main street and the small squares off it.
Antiparos has no superclub scene of the Mykonos or Ios type. The music runs from mellow sets in the cafés to upbeat tracks in the later bars, and the municipality describes nights out with all types of dress, no dress codes and no queues. Summer adds beach parties, religious feast-day celebrations and concerts to the calendar, and our page on Antiparos nightlife covers the bars and the crowd they draw.

Can you camp on Antiparos?
Yes, Antiparos has an organised campsite, a 10-minute walk north of the town and port beside the sandy Camping beach. It opens in spring, closes on 30 September and holds 100 pitches for 300 guests under cedar shade; Greek law bans camping outside licensed sites.
The campsite sits in the Agios Ioannis Theologos area, and the Camping beach in front of it has sand, shallow clean water and shade from cedar and tamarisk trees, with a designated naturist section. Guests pitch their own tent, rent one on site, or book a bamboo hut or a bungalow, and caravans and campervans get their own spots with electricity. Campers who arrive on foot walk from the ferry quay to the gate in 10 minutes.

- Food and shopping: a bar, a mini-market and a self-service restaurant.
- Utilities: electricity, hot showers, toilets, washing machines, freezers and cooking facilities.
- Services: Wi-Fi, parking, first aid and an information desk.
Greek law allows tents, caravans and motorhomes to camp only in licensed campsites, and it bans camping on beaches, in public forests, at archaeological sites and in public places, with fines for offenders. The ban covers every beach on Antiparos, from Sifneiko to Faneromeni, and the archaeological site of Despotiko, so a night under the stars on the island means a pitch at the campsite. Our page on camping on Antiparos covers the pitches, huts and bungalows in detail.
