A Crete private tour is a full or half day on the island with your own driver or licensed guide, a route you choose from your hotel or cruise port, and stops at the villages, beaches, lakes and ancient sites of Crete. Tours across the rest of the country are listed on Greece Tours.
The sections below cover the tours you can book, the driver and the guide, the tours from Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and the east, what fits a private day, pick-up, cruise guests, who it suits, route planning, the months and booking, with links into the Crete pages. The tours shown are checked on GetYourGuide and Viator.
What is a Crete private tour?
A Crete private tour is a day out on Crete for your own party only. A driver or a licensed guide collects you in a private vehicle. The day follows the route your group picks. No strangers join the car.
Each GetYourGuide listing for a Crete private tour carries the label “Private group”. That label means only your party takes part. The same listings show “Pickup available”, so the driver comes to you.
Crete is the largest Greek island, so a single private day picks one region or one theme. The shortest listing is a 3-hour tuk tuk tour of seven villages. The longest day runs 10 hours, from Chania to the Lassithi Plateau.
One listing stretches the format into a full trip. A Battle of Crete private tour on GetYourGuide lasts four days. It follows the island’s Second World War history.
Which Crete private tours can you book?
You can book a Crete private tour on GetYourGuide or Viator, or direct with a local operator. The listings cover full-day driver tours and village days. Others cover the Battle of Crete, monasteries, wine and beach days to Elafonisi.
GetYourGuide sells each Crete private tour below as a booking for your group alone. All six offer pickup and free cancellation, and each length comes from its listing:
- Crete: Full-Day Private Tour, about 7 hours with a professional driver
- Chania Villages Private Tour, about 7.5 hours in remote mountain villages
- Chania Battle of Crete Private Tour, about 7 hours with a historian
- Kournas Lake, Argyroupoli and Apokoronas Villages Private Tour, about 6 hours by SUV
- Private Tour with Classic Mercedes, 6 to 8 hours from Agios Nikolaos
- Gortys, Phaistos and Matala Private Tour, about 8 hours from Heraklion
Viator adds two more private days. “Discover Crete Privately: Wine, Honey, History and Local Cuisine” starts in Heraklion. “Elafonisi and Falasarna Private Tour” starts in Chania and adds an olive oil tasting.
Local firms sell a Crete private tour direct too. Proper Cretan Guide runs history, village and monastery days from Chania. Explore Real Crete runs full days to the Cave of Zeus, traditional villages and olive oil factories.
How does a private driver tour of Crete work?
On a Crete private tour, a professional driver collects your party in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your group chooses every stop on the route. The GetYourGuide full-day listing uses a 6-seat vehicle for about 7 hours.
The listing sums up the idea in four words: drive wherever you please. Your group names the sights, the swim stops and the lunch break. The driver handles the roads and the timing.
That Crete private tour lists pickup, free cancellation and wheelchair access. Booking closes 10 hours before the start. The listing offers eight languages: English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Dutch, Spanish and Romanian.
Chauffeur firms match the vehicle to the group. One VIP service on Crete sends a Mercedes-Benz minivan for 4 to 6 people. Groups of up to 10 ride in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter minibus.
What is the difference between a driver and a licensed guide on a Crete private tour?
On a Crete private tour, a driver drives and shares local tips. Only a licensed tourist guide has the right to guide you inside archaeological sites and museums. Greek law reserves that work for guides qualified by the Ministry of Tourism.
Greek rules are strict on this point. A person without a licence cannot lead a guided tour inside an archaeological site or museum. Tour managers and tour escorts cannot guide there either.
Licensed guides train at a state school for tourist guides. They pass exams in 26 subjects, from archaeology to mythology. At work, each one wears an official ID badge from the Ministry of Tourism around the neck.
- A driver drives the route and keeps to your timing.
- A driver shares tips on food, villages and roads.
- A licensed guide explains sites and museums from the inside.
- A licensed guide wears the official Ministry of Tourism badge.
- A guide-driver holds the licence and drives the vehicle too.
Proper Cretan Guide shows the third option. Apostolis Panigirakis, a historian and licensed tourist guide, founded the Chania agency. On its Chania villages day, one licensed historian guides the group and drives the vehicle.
Which Crete private tours start in Chania?
From Chania, a Crete private tour heads to remote villages, Battle of Crete sites, monasteries or Elafonisi. One long day crosses the island east to Knossos and the Lassithi Plateau. Each of these listings offers pickup.
GetYourGuide lists five private days that start in Chania. The list below gives the length and main stops of each one, exactly as its listing states them:
- Chania Villages Private Tour: 7.5 hours of villages, mountains, gorges and Cretan food
- Battle of Crete Private Tour: 7 hours at Maleme Airport, Hill 107 and German bunkers
- Chania Monasteries Private Tour: 7.5 hours of churches, chapels and monasteries with a historian
- Elafonissi Beach and Cretan Villages Private Tour: 8 hours with a swim and local food
- Knossos, Zeus Cave and Lassithi Plateau Private Tour: 10 hours across the island
Two Chania listings carry the label “Wheelchair accessible”: the villages day and the monasteries day. The Elafonissi day takes bookings up to 4 hours before the start.
A private day out of Chania leaves the evening free for the old town of Chania. The 7-day Crete itinerary shows where a Crete private tour fits in a week on the island.
Which Crete private tours start in Rethymno?
A Crete private tour from Rethymno heads inland to Arkadi Monastery and the Patsos Gorge. Other routes add Melidoni Cave and the pottery village of Margarites. Listings run from 4 hours in the old town to 10 hours with a winery stop.
Three of the five routes below stop at Arkadi Monastery in the hills south-east of Rethymno. The lake tour lists a luxury vehicle, WiFi on board and an expert guide.
Rethymno sits on the north coast between Chania and Heraklion. From that middle point, a Crete private tour runs east to Knossos as well. One guided private trip from Rethymno or Chania to Knossos and Heraklion lasts 7 to 8 hours.
- Rethymno Heritage Tour: Melidoni Cave, Arkadi Monastery, a tasting at Klados Winery and the old town, 10 hours.
- Arkadi, Patsos Gorge and Lake Private Tour: a gorge walk and a rest at Potamon Dam, 6 hours.

- Rethymno Private Patsos Gorge Trekking: river boulders, wooden walkways and a cave church, 8 hours.
Which Crete private tours start in Heraklion?
A Crete private tour from Heraklion covers Knossos, Phaistos, ancient Gortys and the Lasithi Plateau. Private days from the city last 4 to 8 hours. The Knossos and museum tour picks up from city hotels or the cruise port.
Heraklion is the start point of a Crete private tour to the south-central sites. The Gortys, Phaistos and Matala route crosses the island to the Libyan Sea coast. It fills one 8-hour Crete private tour with two ancient sites and a beach.
A western Crete private tour also starts here. One 8-hour listing from Heraklion visits Margarites, Rethymno and Kournas Lake. The VIP Knossos transfer tour adds pickup in Hersonissos and Gouves.
- Knossos Palace and Archaeological Museum Private Tour: skip-the-line entry in 4 hours, one of the Knossos private tours.
- Gortys, Phaistos and Matala Private Tour: two ancient sites and the caves of Matala.
- Private Zaros, Phaistos and Matala Day Trip: Zaros village, Phaistos and free time in Matala, 8 hours.
- Knossos, Zeus Cave and Olive Mill Tour: Knossos plus the Lasithi Plateau and its 16 villages, 8 hours.
- Minoan Path Tour: Knossos, a winery and a village lunch in Archanes, 6.5 to 8 hours.
- Heraklion Museum Private Skip-the-Line Guided Tour: the Minoan finds with a licensed guide, 1.5 hours.
Which Crete private tours start in Agios Nikolaos and the east?
A Crete private tour in the east starts from the towns of Agios Nikolaos, Elounda or Sitia. Routes reach Spinalonga, Vai palm beach, the Richtis Gorge and Moni Toplou. Listed private days last from 5.5 to 12 hours.
The Classic Mercedes Crete private tour is based in Agios Nikolaos. Guests pick the day trip, and the listing names Elounda, Plaka and Spinalonga. Inside, the listing promises the comfort of a modern luxury car.
Spinalonga is a small island, so an eastern Crete private tour adds a boat ride. One 7-hour listing pairs a Land Rover drive with a private speedboat. The day also includes the Milatos Cave, lunch and an olive tasting.
- Private Tour with Classic Mercedes: a chauffeured day trip for up to 4 guests, 6 to 8 hours.
- Mirabello Luxuries with Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos: a private guided day with a choice of vehicle, 8 hours.
- Spinalonga, Milatos Cave and olive tasting: a Land Rover drive and a private speedboat, 7 hours.

- Richtis Gorge Private Guided Hiking Tour: a river gorge walk from Agios Nikolaos, 11 hours.
- Moni Toplou Private Wine Tasting and Tour: organic and vegan-certified wines near Sitia, 5.5 hours.
What does the Chania villages Crete private tour show?
The Chania villages Crete private tour lasts 7.5 hours and heads for isolated villages near Apokoronas. Its listing promises pristine villages, mountains, gorges and rare plants and animals. Guests meet local people and taste real Cretan food.

The day opens with a break at a high viewpoint. There, the guide explains the size of Crete and its past. The route then drives past villages and valleys to the inland heart of Chania.
The next stop is a village with rivers running through it. Guests eat organic sheep yoghurt with Cretan honey by the riverside. The road then crosses a gorge with wide views, goats and sheep.
Later, this Crete private tour reaches a castle from the time of Ottoman rule. The listing also names views over the White Mountains. A licensed historian, certified by the Greek Ministry of Tourism, guides and drives the day.
What does the Battle of Crete private tour cover?
The Battle of Crete private tour spends 7 hours with a Second World War historian around Chania. It visits Maleme airfield, Hill 107 and abandoned German bunkers. Guests also study archive photos and war finds in a private museum.
The listing says a professional historian uses rare documents to lead the way. The route reaches the battlefields, little-known war hideouts and bunkers. Proper Cretan Guide, a Souda firm set up by a historian guide, runs this Crete private tour.
After Maleme and Hill 107, the operator’s page lists desolate sites of the battle. Unknown wartime lookouts and observation posts come next. An original German bunker, unknown to the public, comes before the battle sites and monuments.
A 6.5-hour private Chania tour visits war cemeteries and battle monuments. A 4-day Battle of Crete private tour adds war museums and villages hit by German reprisals. It also follows the evacuation route of the Anzacs, the Australian and New Zealand troops.
What does the Kournas Lake, Argyroupoli and Apokoronas Crete private tour include?
This Crete private tour lasts about 6 hours in a private SUV. The listing names three parts: the villages of Apokoronas, a rest at Lake Kournas and the springs of Argyroupoli. Pickup is available, and no other guests join the group.
GetYourGuide sells this Crete private tour as tour 850275. Its listing builds the day around nature, village culture and local life. Bookings close 10 hours before the start time.
An SUV is a tall car with high ground clearance, built for rough country roads. The route links the Apokoronas villages east of Chania with the green hills of western Rethymno.
- Lake Kournas: the only natural freshwater lake on Crete.
- Argyroupoli: a village at 260 metres, with springs just below it.
- Apokoronas: a rural district of villages between Chania and Rethymno.
- Vehicle: one private SUV for the whole 6-hour day.
Which beaches can a Crete private tour reach?
A Crete private tour from Chania reaches Elafonisi, Falasarna and Balos in the far west. From Heraklion, a listed Crete private tour ends at Matala on the south coast. The full-day driver tour also lists swims in bright-blue lagoons.
The Chania to Elafonissi tour on GetYourGuide (tour 484702) lasts 8 hours. It adds stops in Cretan villages and a taste of local food on the way.
- Elafonisi: 75 km from Chania, about 1.5 hours each way by road.
- Falasarna: a sandy west-coast beach, paired with Elafonisi on Viator tour 149935P10.
- Balos: 56 km north-west of Chania, on the Gramvousa peninsula.
- Matala: the beach and caves at the end of GetYourGuide tour 978617.
The Viator Elafonisi and Falasarna tour is a 10-hour day from Chania. Its listing gives close to 5 hours of free time by the sea for swimming.
Which archaeological sites fit a Crete private tour?
A Crete private tour reaches Knossos, Phaistos, Gortyna, Aptera and Zominthos by road. Listed tours pair them on one route: Gortys and Phaistos with Matala from Heraklion, and Knossos with the Cave of Zeus and Lassithi from Chania.
- Knossos: the Minoan palace 5 km south of Heraklion.
- Gortyna, also spelt Gortys: 46 km south of Heraklion.
- Phaistos: the Minoan palace 62 km south-west of Heraklion.
- Aptera: an ancient city 15 km from Chania, above Souda Bay.
- Zominthos: a Minoan mountain settlement 8 km from Anogia, at 1,187 metres.
The Heraklion tour to Gortys, Phaistos and Matala (GetYourGuide 978617) lasts 8 hours. Its listing names ancient Gortys, the Minoan palace of Phaistos and the beach and caves of Matala.
The Knossos, Zeus Cave and Lassithi Plateau tour (GetYourGuide 434739) starts in Chania. Its listing calls this Crete private tour a 10-hour crossing through myth, mountain villages and Minoan frescoes.
Which monasteries and mountain villages fit a Crete private tour?
A Crete private tour from Chania covers the Gouverneto and Agia Triada monasteries on the Akrotiri peninsula. Listed mountain-village tours visit Anogia on Mount Psiloritis, the Lassithi Plateau and the villages below the White Mountains.
The Chania Monasteries Private Tour (GetYourGuide 472040) lasts 7.5 hours. A private historian leads the group through the churches, chapels and monasteries of the Chania area.
- Gouverneto: a monastery on Akrotiri built like a Venetian fortress.
- Agia Triada: a 17th-century monastery with gardens, an icon museum and its own wine and olive oil.
- Arkadi: a monastery inland from Rethymno.
- Anogia: a village on Mount Psiloritis, the lunch stop on the Viator wine and honey tour.
- Lassithi Plateau: a high plain with mountain villages, on the 10-hour tour from Chania.
Akrotiri is the peninsula that holds Chania airport. A monastery day on a Crete private tour therefore keeps the drive short. The Chania villages tour (GetYourGuide 477144) covers the mountain side, with views of the White Mountains.
Which food and wine stops fit a Crete private tour?
A Crete private tour adds food and wine through stops named in the listings: a winery tasting, a beekeeper, an olive oil factory and village lunches. Two Viator listings and two GetYourGuide listings name these stops.
The Viator tour Discover Crete Privately (product 144392P29) runs 8 hours from Heraklion. It stops at Diamantakis Winery in Kato Asites, a village at 450 metres on the slopes of Psiloritis.
This Crete private tour then visits a local beekeeper to show how honey is made. It passes through the Krousonas Valley and ends with lunch in Anogia.
- Diamantakis Winery: a wine tasting among the vines, on Viator 144392P29.
- Beekeeper visit: honey and the life of bees, on the same tour.
- Vouves: an ancient olive tree and an olive oil factory with tasting, on Viator 149935P10.
- Chania villages: real Cretan food with local people, on GetYourGuide 477144.
- Elafonisi villages: local food on the way to the beach, on GetYourGuide 484702.
Wine lovers can add more cellar doors from the list of Crete wineries. A Crete food tour makes tastings the main event of the day.
How long does a Crete private tour last, and what is included?
A Crete private tour lasts about 6 to 7.5 hours on the listed day trips. Listings include the vehicle, the driver, fuel and bottled water. Entry tickets, meals and tips stay outside the booking unless the listing names them.
The full-day Crete private tour on GetYourGuide runs for about 7 hours. A professional driver takes up to 6 guests in an air-conditioned vehicle. The Battle of Crete tour from Chania also lasts about 7 hours.
The Chania villages Crete private tour lasts 7.5 hours and starts at 8:30 in the morning. A box lunch with water, fruit and chocolate comes with this trip.
The Kournas Lake, Argyroupoli and Apokoronas tour lasts about 6 hours. It runs in a private SUV, a tall four-wheel car. One Chania driver-hire listing, with a minibus or minivan, runs for 6 hours.
- Private air-conditioned vehicle: included
- Professional driver or driver-guide: included
- Fuel, tolls and bottled water: included
- Site and museum entrance fees: not included
- Tips and personal spending: not included
Where does a Crete private tour pick you up?
A Crete private tour collects you at your hotel or cruise port and returns you there afterwards. Each operator serves a fixed pick-up zone. Examples are central Chania and the north coast between Heraklion and Elounda.
The Chania villages tour collects guests from all central Chania areas. The same tour drops each party back at its own hotel at the end of the day.
East Crete operators collect guests from hotels between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. One full-day Crete private tour also names Ierapetra on the south coast. These are the named pick-up zones:
- Heraklion, Amoudara and Agia Pelagia
- Gouves, Gournes and Hersonissos
- Malia, Sissi and Analipsi
- Elounda, Plaka and Agios Nikolaos
- Ierapetra on the south coast
Airport rides are sold as separate transfer bookings. For the trip from the plane to your hotel, see the Chania airport transfers. Your Crete private tour then starts from that hotel door.
Can cruise passengers book a Crete private tour?
Yes, cruise passengers book a Crete private tour from the ports of Souda and Heraklion. Ships calling at Chania dock at Souda Bay, east of the town. The driver meets you at the port and plans the day around your ship’s timetable.
Souda lies about 7 km from Chania Old Town, a drive of 15 to 25 minutes. A Crete private tour reaches the Aptera ancient site in about 15 minutes from the port. The Chania villages tour also runs as a shore trip from Souda.
At Heraklion, ships tie up in the main commercial port, so guests walk straight ashore. Knossos lies 5 to 6 km away, about 15 to 20 minutes by car. Port calls there last about 6 to 8 hours.
Port guides advise 30 to 45 minutes for the ride back to the ship. Full port-day plans sit on the pages for the Chania shore excursion and the Heraklion shore excursion.
Who suits a Crete private tour?
A Crete private tour suits families, older travellers, guests with limited mobility and small groups of friends. The vehicle carries only your party, so the pace, the stops and the breaks follow your needs alone.
Families ask for child seats at booking, and operators fit them on request. Tell the supplier the age of each child. Wheelchair-friendly tours also take babies and small children in a pram or pushchair.
Chania operators run vans fully adapted for wheelchair users. Older travellers ride door to door on a Crete private tour. There is no bus station and no fixed group timetable.
Group size sets the vehicle. The full-day tour seats up to 6 guests. Mercedes-Benz minivans take groups of 4 to 6. A Mercedes-Benz Sprinter minibus carries up to 10 people.
How do you plan the route of a Crete private tour?
Plan a Crete private tour around one region per day. Crete stretches about 260 km from west to east and about 60 km at its widest. A 7-hour day spent crossing the island leaves little time at the stops.
The main road is VOAK, the Northern Crete Highway, on the north coast. It runs from Kissamos in the west to Sitia in the east. It links Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos.
- Chania to Rethymno: 60 km, 30 to 45 minutes
- Rethymno to Heraklion: 78 km, about 1.5 hours
- Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos: 65 km, about 1 hour
- Chania to Heraklion: 138 km, about 2 hours
- Chania to Agios Nikolaos: 204 km, about 3 hours
A Crete private tour to the south coast takes longer. From Heraklion, south coast towns sit 90 minutes to 2 hours away by road. Phaistos lies 60 km from Heraklion, and Matala lies 70 km away.
From Chania, Elafonisi lies 75 km away, Kissamos 42 km and Hora Sfakion 74 km. A Crete private tour from Chania to Knossos means about 4 hours of driving, there and back.
How does a Crete private tour compare with a group tour, a jeep safari or a hire car?
A Crete private tour gives one party its own vehicle, driver and route for the day. A group tour shares a coach and a fixed plan. A jeep safari follows off-road tracks in convoy. A hire car leaves the driving to you.
The main difference is control of the day. On a Crete private tour, your party alone sets the stops and the pace. The full-day listing on GetYourGuide puts it plainly: drive wherever you please with a professional driver.
- Group tour: a shared coach follows a fixed timetable, with the same stops for every guest.
- Jeep safari: a Crete jeep safari drives mountain dirt tracks in a convoy of 4×4 vehicles.
- Hire car: car rental on Crete needs a driver aged 21 or over with a licence held for one year.
- Private tour: one party, one vehicle and one driver, on a route the party agrees with the driver.
A private driver also handles the mountain bends and the parking. Every adult in the party is free to watch the view. With a hire car, one person spends the whole day behind the wheel.
Which months suit a Crete private tour?
A Crete private tour suits the months from April to October. April brings wildflowers and air of 20-22°C. Late spring and September add warm seas. July and August bring 30-35°C heat inland and the biggest crowds of the year.
Two of the listed tours keep a season. The Chania villages tour and the Battle of Crete tour run from early March to early October. The full-day Crete private tour and the Kournas Lake tour show open dates every day, winter included.
- April: 20-22°C air, 17-18°C sea, orange blossom and village processions when Orthodox Easter falls in April.
- Late spring: 24-26°C air, 19-20°C sea, green hills and the opening of Samaria Gorge.
- June: 25-28°C air, 22-23°C sea and the first meltemi winds on the north coast.
- September: 26-28°C air, 24-25°C sea and thinner crowds after the first week.
- October: 22-24°C air, 22-23°C sea, first rains from mid-month and the start of the olive harvest.
High summer has its limits. Elafonisi takes more than 3,000 visitors a day in July and August. The meltemi, a strong summer wind, reaches Beaufort force 5-6 on the north coast. It makes the sea choppy and beach days uncomfortable.
Winter is cool and quiet. Coastal air sits at 12-15°C in January and February, and snow covers the White Mountains above 1,500 m. Samaria Gorge shuts in winter because of the risk of flash floods. Gorge walkers pick from these hiking routes on Crete in the open months.
What do you bring on a Crete private tour?
For a Crete private tour, bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Pack a swimsuit and a beach towel for swim stops. Carry clothes that cover shoulders and knees for monastery visits, plus a light jacket.
Active Orthodox monasteries on Crete share one dress code. Shoulders stay covered, so tank tops and sleeveless shirts are not allowed. Knees stay covered too, so shorts and short skirts stay outside. A loose scarf or a beach towel works as a quick cover-up.
Tour listings for Crete add a jacket and bottled water to the packing list. A jacket helps in mountain villages and on cooler spring and autumn days.
How do you book and cancel a Crete private tour?
You book a Crete private tour online, on its GetYourGuide or Viator listing. The full-day, Chania villages, Battle of Crete and Kournas Lake tours all carry free cancellation. Both sites refund in full when you cancel at least 24 hours before the start.
Booking takes three steps. You choose a date and the size of your party. You pick a tour language and a pick-up point. You then confirm the booking and receive a voucher.
A cancellation inside the last 24 hours brings no refund under the standard terms. Viator also lists products with custom terms, and products marked all sales final that never refund. Viator counts each deadline in the supplier’s local time, which on Crete is Greek time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which languages does a Crete private tour run in?
Languages differ by listing. The full-day Crete private tour lists English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Dutch, Spanish and Romanian. The Chania villages tour and the Battle of Crete tour run in English and Greek. The Kournas Lake tour runs in English, Romanian and Greek.
Does a Crete private tour skip the ticket queues?
The full-day Crete private tour carries a “skip the line” label on its GetYourGuide listing. That label matters in July and August. In those two months, the busiest sites on Crete hold queues of one to two hours. The other three listed tours carry no such label.
Is a Crete private tour priced per person or per group?
It depends on the tour. The full-day Crete private tour books as one group of up to 6 guests. The Kournas Lake tour books as one group of up to 2 guests. The Chania villages and Battle of Crete tours book per person, so each guest holds a ticket.
How late can you book a Crete private tour?
Two listings take late bookings. The full-day Crete private tour and the Kournas Lake tour take bookings up to 10 hours ahead. On a recent check, both showed open dates for the following day. That suits travellers who plan their holiday one day at a time.
How far ahead can you book a Crete private tour?
Calendars open well in advance. The full-day tour and the Kournas Lake tour list dates about 16 months ahead. The Chania villages tour and the Battle of Crete tour already list their dates for the next season. A family can fix a summer Crete private tour during the winter before.
Do you need a driving licence for a Crete private tour?
No. A professional driver sits behind the wheel, so guests need no licence of their own. A hire car is different. Greek law accepts EU, British, American, Swiss, Australian and Canadian licences, among others, without an International Driving Permit. Drivers with other licences obtain that permit before they travel.
