Is Agistri suitable for a day trip?
Agistri is an ideal destination for a day trip from Athens. Its close proximity and quick access via ferry make it perfect for exploring beautiful beaches, enjoying captivating sea views, and experiencing the island’s serene atmosphere.
Where is Agkistri, and how big is the island?
Agkistri is a pine-covered island of the Saronic Gulf, the largest of the small islands between Aegina and the Epidaurus coast of the Peloponnese; it covers just under 12 square kilometres, rises to 294 metres and counted 1,131 residents at the 2021 census.
In summer the population of Agkistri climbs to about 5,000 as visitors arrive. Forests of Aleppo pine cover the centre of the island and reach the sea on the west coast, a ten-minute boat ride from its larger neighbour Aegina. Our Aegina page covers that island in full.
The name Agkistri means “fishing hook” in Greek. The Municipality of Agkistri also takes in the islets of Metopi, Dorousa, Kyra, Spalathronisi and Aponisos, which boats from the island pass on their way round the coast.
What are the villages of Agkistri?
Agkistri has four villages: Megalochori, also called Mylos, the capital on the north coast; Skala, the harbour and tourist centre; Limenaria, a small village on the south side; and Metochi, a hamlet inland from Megalochori.
- Megalochori (Mylos): the capital of Agkistri and home to the largest share of its residents, with the new port opened in September 2006 and the old church of Agios Georgios.
- Skala: the natural harbour of Agkistri, a twenty-minute walk from Megalochori along the coast road, with the hotels, tavernas and cafes of the resort and the church of Agioi Anargyroi.
- Limenaria: a quiet farming village on the far side of Agkistri, close to the Lekani salt lake and the bay of Aponisos.
- Metochi: a hamlet inland from Megalochori, where rock-cut cisterns of the late Roman period survive in the cemetery.
Skala and Megalochori face each other across the north coast of Agkistri and share the island’s beach life, while Limenaria keeps an older, farming rhythm. A walk from Megalochori to Skala passes the island’s historic windmill and the church of Zoodochos Pigi.
Which islets surround Agkistri?
Five islets belong to the Municipality of Agkistri: Metopi, Dorousa, Kyra, Spalathronisi and Aponisos; Dorousa keeps a stretch of early Byzantine wall, and Aponisos shelters a shallow bay off the west coast of the island of Agkistri.
On the west side of Dorousa, a stretch of rubble-stone wall stands on an older defensive circuit assigned to the early Byzantine period, the 4th to 6th century AD. The wall and the late Roman cisterns of Metochi are the visible monuments of late antiquity around Agkistri.
Aponisos lies so close to Agkistri that a shallow beach sits between the two shores, and the walking circuit from Limenaria passes by it. Metopi is a regular swim stop for the day cruises from Athens listed on this page, which also call at Moni, the islet off the coast of Aegina. Kyra and Spalathronisi complete the group of islets in the waters of Agkistri.
Which ports and island transport serve Agkistri?
Agkistri has two ports: Skala, the natural harbour where the ferries from Piraeus and Aegina dock, and the new port at Megalochori, where the Flying Dolphin hydrofoils call; the ferry from Piraeus takes 1.5 hours and the hydrofoil 55 minutes.
The regular sea link between Agkistri and Piraeus began in 1960; before then, islanders crossed to Aegina by caique. From Aegina, the Agistri Express and small water taxis reach Agkistri in ten minutes, which makes the two islands easy to combine: our Aegina to Agistri page covers that crossing, and Agistri day trip from Athens plans a day out from the capital.
On Agkistri itself, a local bus and taxis serve the villages. The distances are short: walkers and cyclists reach the main beaches of Agkistri on the island’s roads and paths.
Which beaches of Agkistri can you reach on foot or by road?
The beaches of Agkistri reached on foot or by road are Skala and Megalochori on the north coast, Dragonera and Aponisos in the west, Skliri and Chalikiada on a coastal path from Skala, and the rocky swimming spot of Mareza near Limenaria.
- Skala: a sandy, shallow beach beside the harbour on the north-east coast of Agkistri, lined with hotels and cafes.
- Megalochori: the sandy beach of the capital on the north coast.
- Dragonera: a pebble beach on the west coast, reached by road, framed by pine forest, with an open-air canteen.
- Skliri and Chalikiada: two neighbouring beaches on a narrow path from the Skala harbour; Chalikiada is isolated and popular with naturists.
- Mareza: a rock platform above the sea near Limenaria, ideal for diving into the sea.
- Aponisos: a shallow beach between Agkistri and the islet of Aponisos.
The west coast of Agkistri faces the sunset over the Peloponnese. The boat tours on this page reach the coves that no road serves.
Which walking trails cross Agkistri?
Agkistri has a network of marked walking trails: a loop from Megalochori to Skala, a route over Kontari peak to Dragonera, a short loop to the chapel of Agia Varvara, and a circuit from Limenaria past Aponisos and the Lekani salt lake.
- Megalochori, Skala beach, Skala, Megalochori: a loop past the historic windmill and the church of Zoodochos Pigi.
- Megalochori, Metochi, Kontari peak, Dragonera, Megalochori: a route of moderate difficulty through the pine forest, past the chapel of Agioi Theodoroi and the panoramic summit of Kontari.
- Dragonera, Agia Varvara, Dragonera: a short, easy loop to a chapel that belongs to the island’s tradition.
- Limenaria, Agios Nikolaos, Aponisos, Lekani lake, Limenaria: a loop on old paths through dense vegetation.
Walk the trails of Agkistri in spring or autumn, or early on summer mornings, and carry water and a hat on every route.
What is the history of Agkistri?
In antiquity Agkistri was called Kekryfaleia, a name recorded by Thucydides, Diodorus and Pliny; the island was inhabited from the Early Helladic to the Hellenistic period, supplied limestone to Epidaurus, and was settled by Arvanites from the late 17th century.
The ancient name Kekryfaleia comes from the kekryphalos, a headscarf worn in ancient Greece, and maps of the 17th and 18th centuries still write it as Cecryphalea. No systematic excavation has taken place on Agkistri, but building foundations at Mandraki bay and surface finds show settlement from the Early Bronze Age to Hellenistic times. A quarry on the shore between Megalochori and Dragonera produced porous limestone for the Gymnasium and the Stoa of the Abaton at the sanctuary of Epidaurus and for the sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas.
The armatolos Mitromaras, Mitros Lekkas, retreated wounded to Agkistri during the Russo-Turkish War and died there on 15 February 1772; an ossuary beside the old church of Agios Georgios in Megalochori is said to hold the bones of his men. Ioannis Agkistriotis of Agkistri fought in the War of Independence of 1821, and a memorial of 1993 at the church of Agioi Anargyroi in Skala honours both men. The Municipality of Agkistri was first founded in 1835, became a community in 1912 and was restored as a municipality in 2011.
Which plants and wildlife live on Agkistri?
Agkistri is covered by Aleppo pine forest, with wild cyclamen, thyme, capers and thistles beneath the trees; chukar partridges live in the interior, swifts breed on the rocky east coast, and a feral population of peafowl roams the island.
In 2011 Agkistri was recognised as a “green island” by the Prefecture of Piraeus and the National Technical University of Athens. The pine forest is also the island’s greatest fire risk, so camping in the forest is no longer allowed. Respect the ban on fires, take rubbish back to the villages, and keep to the marked paths.
