Leros tickets cover the boat or plane that brings you to this small Dodecanese island and the entry to its museums and castle once you land. Plan the wider island route on Greece Tours.
The sections below sort Leros tickets by route and by sight: the Bodrum catamaran, the Piraeus ferry, the island-hopping lines, the flights, the War Museum and the castle, then buses, booking times, discounts and quick answers.
What are Leros tickets?
A visit needs four kinds of Leros tickets: sea, air, sight entry and local transport. Sea and air tickets bring you to the island. Sight entry and local transport tickets only work once you are there, so they come second.
Leros is a small island of the Dodecanese, between Patmos and Kalymnos. Wikipedia places it in the southern Aegean Sea, about 20 miles from Turkey. The full guide to Leros covers the island itself. This page covers Leros tickets only.
- Sea tickets cover a seat on a catamaran or a conventional ferry, the two types that sail to Leros.
- Air tickets cover a seat on a flight to or from the small airport on the island.
- Sight tickets admit you to museums that show archaeology, local history, folklore, printing and the Second World War.
- Local transport tickets cover rides on the island buses and in its taxis.
The word ticket also sets these passes apart from tours. The GetYourGuide listing for a Bodrum to Kos ferry says it is not a tour. It sells a same-day return ferry ticket only. On this page, Leros tickets mean passage or entry, not a guided programme.
Ferry sites such as FerriesinGreece sell the sea tickets. The airline websites of Aegean Airlines and SkyExpress sell the air tickets. FerriesinGreece calls the ferry ticket one of the first steps in planning a holiday on the island. Book the sea or air ticket before any of the other Leros tickets.
Which Leros tickets can you book online?
The sea ticket to Leros on this page is a fast catamaran from Bodrum in Turkey. GetYourGuide lists it as a day trip of 9 hours under the location Leros. Its title reads From Bodrum: Fast Catamaran Ticket to the Greek Island of Leros.
The listing carries four labels: pickup available, free cancellation, new activity and a cut-off of 10 hours in advance. The card shows no cancellation terms, so read them on the full listing page before you book Leros tickets.
The booking form asks you to select participants in three age groups, then to check availability.
- Adult: ages 12 to 99.
- Child: ages 6 to 11.
- Infant: age 5 and younger.
The card shows no departure port, no list of inclusions and no document line. Open the full listing page for all three before you pay. Later sections of this page cover the passport and border rules.
Three more ferry tickets appear on this page. All three sail to or from Kos, not Leros, so none of them counts among the Leros tickets.
- Bodrum to Kos same-day return ferry: a 40-minute fast ferry journey, 8 hours in total.
- Rhodes to Kos one-way ferry: 2 to 3 hours, with the skip-the-line label and an e-ticket delivered after booking.
- Bodrum round-trip ferry to Kos with hotel pickup: 9 to 11 hours, with 8 hours of free time on Kos.
The four listings differ in length and rules. The Leros catamaran lists 9 hours. The Kos same-day return lists 8 hours, and the Kos round trip lists 9 to 11 hours. Three of the four carry the free cancellation label. The Rhodes to Kos ticket does not.
GetYourGuide files each listing under one location. The Leros catamaran sits under Leros. The two Bodrum to Kos tickets sit under Bodrum, and the Rhodes to Kos ticket sits under Rhodes Town.
Two of the Kos tickets, the same-day return and the Rhodes ferry, carry the wheelchair accessible label. The Leros catamaran card shows no such label. Ask the seller before you book Leros tickets for a traveller who needs one.
The booking cut-off runs from 40 minutes on the Kos same-day return to 10 hours on the other three. Of the four, only the Bodrum catamaran is among the Leros tickets you can book here.
How does the Bodrum to Leros catamaran ticket work?
The Bodrum to Leros crossing is a short sea hop on a high-speed vessel. Direct Ferries lists two operators, Ido and Makri Travel, with about 7 sailings a week. Ferryhopper adds Exas Shipping Services as a third name on the route.
Leros tickets on this route are foot-passenger tickets. Ferryscanner states that the route is for foot passengers only. Ferryhopper adds that the boats between Turkish and Greek ports have no car decks. Direct Ferries says cabins are not available on the Bodrum to Leros boats.
Leros tickets from Bodrum end at one of two ports, Lakki or Agia Marina, according to Ferryhopper. It calls Lakki the main port of the island, on the southern coast. In Bodrum, Ferryhopper places the ferry port about 2 km from the city center, near Bodrum Castle.
Ferryscanner names the Turkish port differently on two route pages. One page gives the Turgutreis Ferry Terminal on the southwest coast of the Bodrum Peninsula. The other gives Bodrum Cruise Port. Read the port name on your voucher before the day of travel.
Direct Ferries gives three crossing times for Bodrum to Leros. The Ido sailing takes 45 minutes. The Makri Travel sailing from Monday to Saturday takes 1 hour. The Makri Travel Sunday sailing takes 2 hours. Ferryhopper puts the distance at 34 nautical miles, about 63 km. Leros tickets for the Ido boat cover the shortest crossing.
Ferryhopper lists the route as a summer service, from June to September, with up to 7 crossings a week. Direct Ferries shows Ido at 09:00 on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Makri Travel leaves at 08:30 from Monday to Saturday and at 06:30 on Sunday. Check these days before you book Leros tickets.
The way back leaves Leros later in the day. Direct Ferries lists Makri Travel at 15:00 on Sunday and at 16:30 from Monday to Saturday. It lists Ido at 17:00 on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Direct Ferries also states that day trips between Bodrum and Leros are possible.
Ferryhopper describes the three operators behind Leros tickets from Bodrum as flexible about luggage size and weight. You can keep bags beside you or store them in the luggage area. Ferryhopper advises against carrying more than 50 kg, to avoid delays in that area.
Ferryhopper tells passengers to reach the port of Bodrum at least 1 hour before departure. Its Bodrum page says at least 30 minutes, and Ferryscanner says at least 2 hours. Border checks add time, so Leros tickets from Bodrum call for the longer lead time.
Booking with Exas Shipping through Ferryhopper gives you an e-ticket. You check in online, keep the ticket on your phone and board without a paper copy. Leros tickets of this kind need no collection at the port.
Which passport and border rules apply to Leros tickets from Turkey?
Greece belongs to the 29 European countries that apply the EU’s common short-stay visa rules, and Turkey does not. A ferry from Bodrum to Leros therefore crosses an external Schengen border, where border guards verify your documents.
Your Europe, the EU’s travel portal, sets the rules for non-EU travellers on Leros tickets from Turkey. You need a valid passport and a visa if your nationality requires one. The passport must stay valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the EU. It must have been issued within the last 10 years.
Children need their own passport and a visa where one applies. Border officials can ask for supporting documents. Your Europe lists an invitation letter, proof of lodging and a return or round-trip ticket. Keep the return half of your Leros tickets with your passport.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a country list for visa rules. It marks ordinary passports from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia as visa-free. It marks ordinary Turkish passports as needing a visa. Your Europe states that the common short-stay rules cover up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
The Commission counts over 100,000 on-arrival visas for Turkish tourists on certain eastern Aegean islands. The Commission page does not list the islands. The ministry page on the earlier pilot names Rhodes, Kos, Samos, Chios and Lesvos, not Leros.
Your Europe tells travellers to ask the embassy or consulate of the destination country for exact requirements. Ask the Greek consulate whether your nationality needs a visa for Leros tickets from Turkey. Check whether an island scheme applies as well.
The Entry/Exit System registers non-EU nationals on a short stay each time they cross an external border. It records your name, travel document data, fingerprints and a facial image. It also logs the date and place of entry and exit, and refusals of entry. The Commission says the EES replaces the stamping of passports.
The Commission describes the EES as the system for the external borders of 29 European countries. A non-EU traveller on a short stay with Leros tickets from Turkey matches that description. Once border guards verify your documents, Your Europe says no further checks follow inside the Schengen area.
How do ferry Leros tickets from Piraeus work?
A ferry ticket from Piraeus to Leros covers one overnight sailing of about nine and a half hours. Blue Star Ferries operates the line, and the ship docks at Lakki, the main port of Leros. Direct Ferries counts three sailings a week.
Blue Star Ferries is the only operator that Direct Ferries lists for Leros tickets from Piraeus. The route page gives an average crossing of 9 hours 35 minutes. The fastest sailing takes 9 hours 10 minutes. The line covers 198 nautical miles.
The Direct Ferries timetable for one October week lists one sailing from Piraeus. It leaves at 18:00 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The ship reaches Leros at 03:35. Ferry schedules change with the season, so read the sailing days again when you book.
Lakki lies 4 km from Platanos, the capital of Leros, says Ferries in Greece. Direct Ferries gives the port address as Akti Ploutarchou Plessa in Lakki. Because the ship arrives at 03:35, tell your hotel about the late arrival.
Wikipedia lists two Blue Star lines that call at Leros. Blue Star 2 runs from Piraeus through Syros, Amorgos and Patmos to Leros, Kos and Rhodes. The Blue Star Patmos line adds Astypalaia, Fournoi and Ikaria. That ship serves the Cyclades, the Dodecanese or the North Aegean, depending on the period.
The ticket seller go-ferry describes three kinds of place on Blue Star Ferries ships.
- A deck ticket gives unassigned seating in the indoor lounges, cafe bars and outdoor decks.
- A numbered aircraft seat is a reserved, reclining seat in a quiet lounge hall.
- A cabin has a private shower and toilet, in 1-bed, 2-bed and 4-bed layouts.
Direct Ferries confirms that cabins are available on this route. Ferries in Greece calls the trip long, so it recommends a cabin with your Leros tickets. The cabins on Blue Star Patmos sleep two to four people and have private bathrooms, says Wikipedia.
Leros tickets with a car are possible on the Piraeus line. Direct Ferries states that Blue Star Ferries allows cars on the Athens (Piraeus) to Leros ferry. Foot passengers board the same ship. The garage of Blue Star 2 takes 640 vehicles and 100 trailers. Two ramp doors at the stern open it.
Which ferry Leros tickets link the Dodecanese islands?
Ferry Leros tickets to Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Patmos, Lipsi and Agathonisi come from two operators. Dodekanisos Seaways runs the catamarans for the short island hops. Blue Star Ferries calls at Leros on its long lines from Piraeus.
Dodekanisos Seaways runs daily routes to Leros, says its own news page. Its Leros tickets cover two catamarans, the Dodekanisos Express and the Dodekanisos Pride. Wikipedia places the Pride on a line that starts in Rhodes. The line stops at Symi, Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Lipsi, Patmos and Agathonisi, among others.
Leros tickets come in two boat types, according to Ferries in Greece: high-speed catamarans and conventional ferries. It says the Dodecanese boats leave every day in peak season. The Athens line leaves every week. Direct Ferries lists these crossing times from Leros.
- Kos: 1 hour 25 minutes with Dodekanisos Seaways, 1 hour 45 minutes with Anem Ferries, about 2 hours with Blue Star Ferries.
- Patmos: 45 minutes with Dodekanisos Seaways, 55 minutes with Blue Star Ferries.
- Kalymnos: 45 minutes with Dodekanisos Seaways, 1 hour with Blue Star Ferries.
- Rhodes: 3 hours 50 minutes with Dodekanisos Seaways, 5 hours 35 minutes with Blue Star Ferries.
- Agathonisi: 1 hour 35 minutes with Dodekanisos Seaways.
The catamaran cuts the Rhodes crossing by 1 hour 45 minutes against the Blue Star ship. A traveller with Leros tickets for Rhodes saves time on the Dodekanisos boat. The Kos crossing covers 29 nautical miles, and the Patmos crossing covers 22 nautical miles.
Direct Ferries shows one October week for Leros tickets from Kos. A Dodekanisos Seaways boat leaves at 10:25 on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It reaches Leros at 11:50. The Blue Star Ferries sailing leaves Kos at 20:30 on Monday and Friday and arrives at 22:30.
Blue Star Ferries and Dodekanisos Seaways both allow cars on the Leros to Patmos crossing, says Direct Ferries. Foot passengers travel on both. The fastest Patmos sailings take about 40 minutes with Dodekanisos Seaways.
Which small-boat Leros tickets reach Lipsi, Patmos and Arki?
Leros Seaways runs the boat for these Leros tickets: the passenger ship Leros Express, which leaves Agia Marina at 08:00. On Monday and Thursday it calls at Lipsi, Patmos and Arki. On Tuesday and Wednesday it sails to Kalymnos.
Ferries.gr lists one route and one ship for Leros Seaways. The Monday and Thursday timetable starts at Agia Marina at 08:00. The ship then reaches these ports.
- Lipsi at 08:35
- Patmos at 09:15
- Arki at 10:00
- Agathonisi at 10:50
- Pythagorio on Samos at 11:55
Leros tickets for the way back follow the same Monday and Thursday timetable. The ship leaves Pythagorio at 12:30, Arki at 14:25, Patmos at 15:10 and Lipsi at 15:50. It arrives back at Agia Marina at 16:25.
Take the Monday morning ship and you land on Patmos at 09:15. The Leros Express leaves Patmos again at 15:10. Lipsi works the same way, with arrival at 08:35 and departure at 15:50.
Tuesday and Wednesday are shorter. The ship leaves Agia Marina at 08:00 and reaches Kalymnos at 09:20 on Tuesday. On Wednesday it reaches Myrties on Kalymnos at 09:20. It leaves Kalymnos at 13:00 and is back at Agia Marina at 14:20. The page lists no other days.
Check the date before you buy Leros tickets for this line. Ferries.gr states that the itineraries and fares are subject to change. Its booking engine holds the current times.
The Leros Express carries passengers only. Ferries.gr lists 240 passengers, no cabins and no vehicles. The ship is 20 metres long and 5 metres wide, and it sails at 25 knots.
Wikipedia places Arki east of Patmos, north of Lipsi and southwest of Agathonisi. It adds that small ferries link Arki with nearby islands such as Marathi. The Leros Seaways route name lists Arki but not Marathi.
Where on Leros do you buy and use ferry tickets?
Buy Leros tickets for the ferry online, by phone or at an agency. Use them at Agia Marina or Lakki. Dodekanisos Seaways names Agia Marina as the arrival port for its catamarans and Lakki as the port in bad weather.
The same company runs a passenger and vehicle ferry, the Panagia Skiadeni. Its arrival port on Leros is Lakki, and Agia Marina takes over in bad weather. Read the port on your Leros tickets again on the day you travel.
Other sources agree on Agia Marina. Lerosisland.com calls it the arrival and departure point for hydrofoils and catamarans. Aktoploika.gr calls Agia Marina the second and smaller port of the island, joined to Platanos.
Lakki is the main port, 4 kilometres from Platanos, says Aktoploika.gr. Direct Ferries gives the Port of Leros address as Akti Ploutarchou Plessa in Lakki. It also lists a terminal at Agia Marina.
Dodekanisos Seaways lists Aegean Travel among its central agencies for Leros, at Vasileos Georgiou 9 in Lakki. Its terms say you can buy tickets at those agencies, on its website, by phone or in its app. Buy Leros tickets for the catamarans in any of these ways.
Tickets bought by phone or on the website are intangible. The company terms say passengers board by showing the QR code sent by email or SMS. Ferries.gr gives the same advice for e-ticket lines: print the web check-in confirmation or save it on your phone.
Not every line offers an e-ticket. Ferries.gr says companies without web check-in need you to print your tickets at the local agent. Paid in advance tickets wait at the local port agency before departure. Show the reservation codes from your email there. Collect such Leros tickets early.
Ferries.gr also takes booking requests for Leros Seaways through its domestic ferry request form. Its call centre takes calls on weekdays, first from 09:00 to 15:00 and then from 17:00 to 20:00. On Saturday the hours run from 09:00 to 15:00. Ferries.gr says a missing route can mean the departure is not released yet.
Arrive at the quay in good time with your Leros tickets. Dodekanisos Seaways asks passengers to reach the ship sixty minutes before departure. Ferries.gr advises at least one hour for domestic trips.
Each ticket is individual and cannot pass to another person, say the Dodekanisos Seaways terms. Keep the ticket with the traveller whose name it carries when you board at the Leros quay.
How do you buy flight Leros tickets?
Airline websites sell the seats. Aegean Airlines lists flights from Athens to Leros and from Thessaloniki to Leros. Sky Express lists flights from Athens, Rhodes and Astypalaia to Leros. The airport code on every booking is LRS, and the flight from Athens takes 45 minutes.
Leros Municipal Airport stands at Partheni, in the north of the island. It opened in nineteen eighty-four. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority runs it. Flight Leros tickets name this airport, which has one small terminal.
Runway 14/32 is 1,012 metres long. A runway of that length takes only small aircraft, so Leros tickets cover planes of 50 seats. The airport has no ILS, so pilots land with NDB or satellite RNAV approaches.
Wikipedia names two carriers at the terminal. Olympic Air flies to Athens. Sky Express flies to Astypalaia, Kalymnos, Kos and Rhodes. Lerosisland.com adds that both carriers offer direct flights from Athens.
Sky Express sets a baggage limit for each fare on flights within Greece. Read the limit before you pay for your Leros tickets:
- SKY joy: one cabin bag of 8 kg and one personal item of 40 x 30 x 15 cm.
- SKY joy+: the same cabin allowance plus one checked bag of 15 kg.
- SKY enjoy: one cabin bag of 8 kg and one checked bag of 23 kg.
- SKY Basic: one cabin bag of 8 kg and one checked bag of 15 kg. It covers Leros flights to and from Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos and Astypalaia.
Business Class fares run on four Athens routes only, and Leros is not one of them. Every fare is charged per passenger for one flight. The confirmation code is your proof of reservation.
Online check-in for your Leros tickets opens 48 hours before departure and closes 3 hours before it. Sky Express asks you to reach the airport 2 hours before departure. The check-in desk closes 40 minutes before a flight leaves a Greek airport.
Aegean Airlines puts the airport 9 km from Platanos. GreekAirports.gr lists taxis and pre-arranged hotel transfers as the ways into town. Lerosisland.com says no bus runs to Partheni, so ask your hotel for a car before your Leros tickets are final.
Which Leros tickets combine a flight to Kos with a ferry?
Two tickets make the Kos route: a flight into Kos and a ferry from Kos to Leros. Blue Star Ferries, Dodekanisos Seaways and Anem Ferries sail the crossing. Sky Express also lists a Kos to Leros flight that skips the boat.
Fly into Kos Island International Airport Hippocrates, code KGS. Its terminal covers 24,000 square metres. KTEL Kos regional buses link the airport with Kos Town, Kardamena and Kefalos. Our guide to getting to Kos covers the flights in.
Direct Ferries names Kos Town as both the main town and the ferry harbour. A bus to Kos Town therefore brings you to the harbour town. The airline and the ferry company are different sellers, so these Leros tickets are two separate bookings.
Three operators run the Kos to Leros ferry. Direct Ferries gives these crossing times:
- Dodekanisos Seaways: 1 hour 25 minutes.
- Anem Ferries: 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Blue Star Ferries: 2 hours 5 minutes.
The route is 29 nautical miles (52.9 km) long, says Direct Ferries. Both Direct Ferries and Ferryhopper list 55 minutes as the fastest sailing. Ferryhopper shows the crossing on 5 to 7 days a week. Check the ferry day before you fix the flight date.
Every ferry ticket from Kos names an arrival port on Leros. Ferryhopper lists two, Agia Marina and Lakki. Direct Ferries gives the Lakki address as Akti Ploutarchou Plessa. Ferryhopper says weather conditions can decide which port a ship uses.
Dodekanisos Seaways sells ferry Leros tickets on its own website and app. Its Leros page names the catamarans Dodekanisos Express and Dodekanisos Pride. The Sky Express flight needs no port transfer. Its SKY Basic fare gives one cabin bag of 8 kg and one checked bag of 15 kg.
How do Leros tickets for the War Museum work?
The War Museum of Leros lists general admission as its ticket on the Visit Greece site. The museum opens daily from 09:30 to 13:30 and gives its address as Kamara. A bus from Agia Marina covers the 6 km in 13 minutes.
Leros tickets for the museum come as general admission. The Visit Greece page for the Merikia Tunnel carries a ticket booking line and an operating hours line. The Greek National Tourism Organisation runs that site.
The Italians dug the tunnel in the nineteen-thirties, when Leros was a naval base. Today the restored galleries hold the museum. Visit Greece says they house finds from the island and objects salvaged from the sea.
Treat the opening hours as part of your Leros tickets plan. The Visit Greece listing gives daily hours from 09:30 to 13:30. The Aegean Islands guide says the tunnel is open on a daily basis during the summer months. That page gives no hours. It lists the phone numbers +30 22470 22109 and 28035, so call to confirm the season.
Wikivoyage places the War Museum inside a restored military tunnel at Merikia. Visit Greece gives the postal address as Kamara, Leros 85400. A travel listing on travelfind.gr names the spot as Merikia, Leros. Wikivoyage also lists map coordinates of 37.12726 north and 26.839756 east.
The Visit Greece page lists only the bus under access, at 6 km and 13 minutes from Agia Marina. Fix your sea or air Leros tickets first. Then fit the museum into a morning, since the listed hours end at 13:30.
Visit Greece describes what Leros tickets for the museum let you see:
- Restored underground galleries with artefacts found on the island or salvaged from the sea.
- Photographs, historical maps, models, letters, military equipment and period objects.
- A short film of historical footage at the end of the tour.
- An open-air military park in the outdoor grounds, with vehicles, aircraft and military equipment of the era.
The Aegean Islands guide describes the surroundings as a military park. It names decommissioned military vehicles, armoured vehicles and fighting aircraft on display. Wikipedia adds weaponry, maps, photographs and army uniforms to the list of exhibits in the tunnel.
Which castle visit can you add to your Leros tickets?
The castle of Panteli crowns Pityki hill above Platanos. The Kalispera island guide lists it open daily from 08:30 to 13:00. It adds Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 15:00 to 19:00. A stair climb of roughly 500 steps and a surfaced road both lead up.

Wikivoyage lists the Castle of Leros as perched high above Platanos, with panoramic views from the top. It gives map coordinates of 37.156794 north and 26.859072 east. Add the castle to your Leros tickets plan as a separate stop from the War Museum.
The climb belongs in your Leros tickets plan. A medgulets.com guide calls the traditional route a stairway of roughly 500 steps from Platanos, steep but short. It names the alternative as a surfaced road that winds up from Panteli at an easier gradient. Visit Greece describes a paved path that starts in the neighbourhoods of the hamlet.
The Kalispera guide says the castle lies about 200 metres above sea level and the path is very steep. It tells readers to choose the road or the path. An Orthodox Christian blog counts 499 stairs and places the hill almost in the centre of the island.
At the top stand three circuit walls and the remains of small chapels, according to the medgulets.com guide. Inside the walls is the church of the Panagia tou Kastrou. The Kalispera guide says the church is restored. The Aegean Islands guide says it keeps the island’s protecting icon, the Theotokos Vrefokratousa.
A room beside the church serves as an ecclesiastical museum of Byzantine art, per the medgulets.com guide. Wikivoyage names it the Ecclesiastical Vestry of Byzantine Art in Panteli. The Aegean Islands guide says visitors see icons, manuscripts and holy relics there. It adds that the museum is open on a daily basis.
The Orthodox Christian blog adds a church of the Holy Trinity with fragments of frescoes from the ninth century. It also lists an early Christian church for the Unknown Christian Martyr. The blog says the church celebrates the Dormition on 15 August and the Apodosis on 23 August. Note both dates when you set your Leros tickets.
Compare the two opening lists before you buy Leros tickets for the ferry or flight. Visit Greece closes the War Museum at 13:30 each day. Kalispera lists the castle’s afternoon hours on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only. The Aegean Islands page for the church gives no hours, so ask locally.
Which museum Leros tickets cover art and island history?
Leros tickets for art and island history lead to three stops. The Archaeological Museum sits in Agia Marina. The Bellenis Tower museum stands in Alinda, and two weekday collections show printing and traditional life.
The Archaeological Museum of Leros occupies a nineteenth-century neoclassical building in Agia Marina. Its rooms hold pottery, figurines, sculptures from buildings, inscriptions, coins and fresco fragments. The finds follow the island from the prehistoric period to Byzantine times.
The museum stands next to the primary school of Agia Marina, on the road between Platanos and the port. The Ministry of Culture page lists museum Leros tickets for the winter and summer seasons. Both seasons run from 08:30 to 15:30, and the museum closes on Tuesday.
The ministry notes on Leros tickets set the last admission 20 minutes before closing time. A local guide gives 15:00 as the closing hour, so the two sources differ by 30 minutes. The ministry page advises a call to the museum before your visit.
The Bellenis Tower overlooks Alinda Bay and houses the Historical and Folklore Museum of Leros. A Lerian benefactor who lived abroad built it in the early twentieth century. The design joins medieval fortified architecture with neoclassical details. The top of the tower has battlements and a round turret.
Plan Leros tickets for the tower around its collection of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It differs from usual folklore displays, because Leros society of that time was bourgeois. Clothing, musical instruments, embroideries and wood-carved church icons fill the rooms. Photographs, documents and local artefacts add the maritime heritage of the island.
One room keeps a makeshift surgical bed, medical instruments and a sterilization oven. The tower served as a hospital in the Second World War. Another room shows the artworks of a painter who lived in exile on Leros under the junta.
The lerosisland.com listing gives opening hours of 09:00 to 13:00 and 18:30 to 21:00. The tower closes on Mondays and holidays. The listing names no ticket details, so phone the museum to ask about Leros tickets.
Platanos holds two mansions with folklore artefacts and objects from the island’s history. They also keep a historic archive and photographic material. The Municipal Library sits in the neoclassical Town Hall on the central square of Platanos. It keeps rare manuscripts, old books and a historical archive.
The Leros Way lists two more weekday stops. The Leros Traditional House shows traditional island life. The Leros Print Museum shows type, printing machines from the Royal Technical Schools and printed material, including the local paper. Both open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 14:00 and close on weekends.
Panteli has the Ecclesiastical Vestry of Byzantine Art for church art. The church of Agios Theologos was built in the eleventh century on the ruins of an early Christian church. Its mosaics survive, and it opens Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 14:00.
How do bus and taxi Leros tickets work?
Bus Leros tickets come from the driver on board, and the fare depends on the distance travelled. Two main taxi stations serve the island, one in Lakki and one in Platanos. Rental offices open in four places.
Leros tickets for the public bus cover a single line, according to The Leros Way. It starts at Xirokampos and ends at Blefouti, with stops at villages in between. Another island guide has the bus start at Platanos and serve Alinda, Agia Marina, Lakki and Xerokambos. The guides differ, so read the posted timetable.
The timetable is online and at bus stations around the island. A notice on The Leros Way limits the bus to school routes in autumn. The morning bus leaves Kamara at 07:30 and arrives in Lakki at 09:30. The afternoon bus leaves Kamara at 13:00 and arrives in Lakki at 15:00.
The notice welcomes visitors on these runs, and the driver sells Leros tickets on board. The same notice lists a phone line for the driver.
A taxi replaces bus Leros tickets for travellers with luggage and gives a direct door-to-door ride. The Leros Way advises booking a taxi in advance during peak season, on flight arrival and when a ferry docks. It also lists taxi drivers who serve as island tour guides.
Distances are short. Agia Marina lies about 2 kilometres from Alinda and about the same distance from Panteli. A guide to the island notes that walking covers these hops if you plan no longer tours.
Cars and scooters are rented in Agia Marina, Alinda, Lakki and Panteli. Wikivoyage notes that small rental cars are available, and company representatives meet you at the port or airport. The Leros Way recommends its Guide to Traffic Rules in Leros before you drive.
E-bikes are available in Lakki and need an app to use them. The Leros Way adds that rental car companies and bicycle stores rent standard bicycles and e-bikes. Guided cycling tours cover sunsets, island attractions and extreme paths.
When do you book Leros tickets?
Book ferry seats for July and August as soon as your dates are fixed. Ferriesingreece says Greek ferries can be fully booked in those months. Dodekanisos Seaways asks passengers to secure seats promptly in summer.
Wikipedia gives Leros 7,992 residents and says the number swells to over 15,000 at the summer peak. Fix the sea leg first, then book the room around it. Your Leros tickets set the dates for everything else.
Easter is a peak of its own for Leros tickets. News reports on Easter week say ferry tickets were nearly sold out for Holy Wednesday and Holy Thursday. Cabins on long routes to the Dodecanese were hard to find, and ship garages were reported full.
Winter works the other way for Leros tickets. Lonely Planet says ferry schedules are much more limited in winter. From November to April, links between the smaller Aegean islands can be nonexistent. Summer timetables appear only just before the peak season starts.
Dodekanisos Seaways posts itinerary changes on its own website, 12ne.gr. One notice changed the itineraries of both its catamarans from 2 October until 18 October. Read the site before you buy Leros tickets for spring or autumn.
Each operator sets its own change and refund windows. These come from the published terms:
- Dodekanisos Seaways: cancel with no fee up to 7 days before departure. A 50% fee applies up to 24 hours before. On the day of departure, no cancellation is possible.
- Dodekanisos Seaways open-date ticket: convert it up to 12 hours before departure. It stays valid for one year and allows one change.
- Blue Star Ferries in high season: free cancellation or a date change up to 7 days before, then a 50% charge up to 12 hours before.

Blue Star adds a deadline for Leros tickets. A booked ticket must be issued within the time your agent names, or the booking is cancelled automatically. An open-date ticket is valid for boarding only with a boarding card for the travel date.
How do wind and strikes change Leros tickets?
A wind ban stops the sailing. Your ticket then moves to a new departure or turns into a refund, depending on the operator. A seamen’s strike can dock ferries for 48 hours. Check the operator’s notice before you travel.
The meltemi, or etesian wind, blows across the Aegean from late spring to mid-September. Check it when you plan Leros tickets. Wikipedia says it can reach Beaufort 7 to 8. It adds that the majority of inter-island ferries cannot sail in such conditions.
Port authorities impose sailing bans from the forecast. One January ban closed Piraeus and Rafina after a forecast of Beaufort 6 to 7, locally 8. Blue Star Ferries, Fast Ferries and Golden Star Ferries cancelled sailings.
On a stronger day, winds reached force 9. To Vima reported that departures from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio were all cancelled and that Dodecanese services were suspended.
Operators write the ban into their terms. Dodekanisos Seaways says it is not responsible for the delay or cancellation. You can change the ticket or take a refund within six months. Read that clause before you pay for Leros tickets.
Blue Star Ferries lets you board a delayed sailing with the same ticket. The ticket of a cancelled sailing is swapped for the next departure, subject to availability. Passengers contact the port agencies for the new time.
EU rules for sea passengers add rights. If a carrier cancels, you choose a refund within 7 days or re-routing at no extra cost. A delay of more than 90 minutes at departure gives the same choice.
The rules cover Leros tickets on sailings from an EU port. They also cover sailings into an EU port from outside the EU when an EU company runs them. Ships that carry up to 12 passengers fall outside the rules.
Severe weather limits those rights. You are not owed a hotel night when severe weather caused the cancellation. A late arrival pays 25% to 50% of the ticket price, but not when severe weather caused the delay.
Complain to the carrier about Leros tickets within 2 months of the sailing. The carrier must react within 1 month and give a final reply within 2 months of your complaint.
Strikes follow a different pattern. On 24 January, GTP reported that the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) had announced a 48-hour strike. The strike was set for 8 and 9 February, with ferries docked across Greece. To Vima says PNO strikes cancel nearly all coastal routes from the mainland, apart from narrow crossings such as Salamina.
In another case, the PNO met the Association of Passenger Shipping Companies on 2 October. The union then announced a two-day strike for 22 and 23 October.
One strike was organised to coincide with Orthodox Easter. It halted ferries to the islands and left thousands of islanders stranded. Keep your booking code for Easter Leros tickets until the new sailing is confirmed.
Which discounts and ID rules apply to Leros tickets?
The discount on Leros tickets depends on the operator, the traveller’s age and the papers in your bag. Children, students, large families and travellers with disabilities get fare cuts on Greek ferries. Every passenger shows ID at boarding.
Dodekanisos Seaways carries infants up to four years, 11 months and 29 days old for free. Children from five years to ten years, 11 months and 29 days pay half the fare. Blue Star Ferries uses the same age bands and gives children 50% off on all accommodation types.
Blue Star Ferries makes a zero-fare ticket compulsory for each child under five. Add the child to your Leros tickets even when the fare is zero.
Blue Star Ferries gives International Student Identity Card holders 50% off passenger fares, except LUX cabins and VIP seats. Show the card when you buy Leros tickets and again when you board. The discount does not cover high school students. Greek public university students get the same 50% with the same exceptions.
Dodekanisos Seaways gives Greek citizens in a family with four or more children 50% off. The family card, verified for the current year, is shown when the ticket is issued and when boarding. Blue Star Ferries adds a discount for families with three children, for citizens who hold Greek certification documents.
Passengers with a disability rate of 80% or more get 50% off at Dodekanisos Seaways. Blue Star Ferries extends its 50% to the companion of a passenger with a disability above 80%. Both operators ask for supporting documents when the ticket is issued and at boarding.
Both operators apply only the largest discount when two fit, because discounts are not cumulative. A holder of a discount ticket without the right papers pays the fare difference. Check the papers before you pay for discounted Leros tickets.
Dodekanisos Seaways asks you to show the ticket and a passport, identity card or other valid travel document at boarding. Crews run checks during the trip, so keep the ticket coupon until you leave the boat. The company can refuse a passenger without valid travel documents.
The booking form needs each passenger’s surname, full name, gender, nationality and date of birth. Dodekanisos Seaways ties this list to EU Directive 98/41 on registering people who travel on passenger ships. Check the identity data printed on your Leros tickets before you accept them.
Children under 15 cannot travel alone with Leros tickets on Dodekanisos Seaways. Their ID check uses an identity card or passport. For domestic trips a KEP or Police identity certificate is also accepted. Teenagers aged 15 to 18 can travel alone with a parent’s statement. The Police, the Port Authority or Gov.gr must certify it.
Dodekanisos Seaways lists Kos among the islands with daily routes to Leros. The same papers apply to a Leros day trip from Kos on its boats.
Sites that the Ministry of Culture manages are free to enter on fixed days:
- 6 March
- 18 April
- International Museums Day
- The last weekend of September
- 28 October
- The first and third Sunday of each month from 1 November to 31 March
Children and young people up to 25 from EU countries enter free with an ID card or passport. Children up to 18 from non-EU countries enter free with a passport. Greek and EU citizens over 65 pay 50% less from 1 October into late spring.
The Ministry checks age and country from an ID card or passport. Carry one when you buy Leros tickets for a state-run site.
Which quick questions do Leros tickets raise?
Pets, bikes, luggage, cars, pregnancy and hotel transfers decide what your Leros tickets must cover. Each answer below comes from an operator’s terms page, a ferry-booking help page or a travel guide.
Can you take a pet on the ferry?
Yes, with a ticket for the pet. Dodekanisos Seaways records the animal’s health booklet or ID number, marking number, size and category on it. Pets stay in outdoor pet areas under the owner’s watch, leashed and muzzled. Ferryhopper notes that a pet needs a ticket even when it travels free.
Can you bring a bicycle with your Leros tickets?
Ferryhopper’s help centre says you can take a bike on board a ferry with a car deck. Expect a bike ticket, paid or free. Small catamarans and high-speed ferries can apply stricter bike rules, so check the company’s rules for your route. Greek companies carry bikes free when the garage has space.
How much luggage do Leros tickets cover?
Dodekanisos Seaways allows hand luggage up to 40 kg and 0.5 m3. It sits in the vehicle compartment, and passengers have no access during the trip. Blue Star Ferries carries luggage up to 50 kilos free of charge. Keep money and valuables with you or hand them to the financial officer.
Can you bring a car with your Leros tickets?
Dodekanisos Seaways sells vehicle tickets and asks for the vehicle registration certificate. The high-speed Dodekanisos Express and Dodekanisos Pride take empty vehicles only. Their height limit is 1.90 m without a trailer. The conventional ship Panagia Skiadeni takes vehicles up to 4.20 m.
Can pregnant travellers use Leros tickets?
Dodekanisos Seaways lets pregnant women board until the end of the 26th week. They show a medical certificate of fitness to travel. The carrier can ask for the certificate at any stage. It can refuse passage if it is unsure the passenger will be safe.
How do you get from the port to your hotel?
A ferry guide notes that hotels with their own minibus transfer guests between the hotel and the port. Ring your hotel while you plan your Leros tickets and ask whether it offers the service.
