What is the Palace of Phaistos?
A Minoan palace on a hill in the Messara, first built around 2000 BC, destroyed and rebuilt three times over about three centuries, and finally destroyed around 1400 BC, about two thirds the size of the palace at Knossos.
The site was first inhabited around 3600 BC.
The palace stood on the eastern hill and an acropolis on the western.
It served religious and political purposes, storage, housing and a theatre.
The later palaces shifted slightly east of the first.
An earthquake may have caused the final destruction.
Phaistos was one of the three largest cities of Minoan Crete.
What does the guide show you at Phaistos?
The theatre area, larger than the one at Knossos, the grand staircases to the propylaea, the central court, the west sector’s ceremonial rooms, the peristyle, the royal apartments facing Mount Psiloritis, and the storerooms of the first palace.
The palace rose over four levels.
A twin gate led to the central court.
Floors and walls were faced with gypsum.
The royal rooms were built of alabaster and other materials.
A colonnade frames the view of the Kamares cave and Psiloritis.
The central court is a large paved rectangle with colonnades along its long sides.
What is the theatre area at Phaistos?
The broad stepped area on the first level of the palace, larger than the theatre area at Knossos, which with two staircases gave access through large doors to the main hall of the propylaea.
Shrines stood on the same level.
Two staircases rise from it.
Guides start the tour here.
The view takes in the whole palace.
The propylaea opened through large doors.
It is the first level of the palace.
What is the peristyle at Phaistos?
It had two storeys.
The columns carried the upper floor walkway.
The centre was open to the sky.
Guides point out the column bases.
Four columns stood on each side.
The royal apartments lay close by.
What is the Phaistos Disc?
A fired clay disc about 16 centimetres across, stamped on both sides with a spiral text of 242 signs drawn from 45 distinct symbols in an unknown script, found at Phaistos on 3 July 1908 by the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier.
The signs were pressed into the soft clay with stamps before firing.
It was found in the basement of room 8 in building 101.
A Linear A tablet lay a few centimetres away.
Archaeologists now accept the disc as authentic.
It is displayed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
The disc has its own page at Phaistos Disc.
Has the Phaistos Disc been deciphered?
No: its purpose and place of manufacture remain disputed, and although many amateur and professional attempts assume it is a script, and most a syllabary, none has been accepted.
Some scholars first suspected a forgery.
Others propose an alphabet or logography.
The disc is unique, which blocks comparison.
It dates from the middle or late Minoan Bronze Age.
Guides tell the story at the find spot.
The museum visit completes the story.
Who excavated Phaistos?
Captain Thomas Spratt located the site in 1853 on the hill of Kastri, Antonio Taramelli dug pottery there in 1894 for Federico Halbherr, and Halbherr and his student Luigi Pernier excavated from 1900 to 1904, with work continuing until 1908.
Spratt triangulated the site from Gortyn, Matala and the coast.
A village of 16 houses stood on the ridge then.
Traces of walls showed an ancient city had stood there.
Seal stones and cylinder seals were found early.
The excavators were Italian.
Pernier found the disc in 1908.
What happened to Phaistos after the Minoans?
The site was lived in again from the Geometric age in the eighth century BC, minted its own stater, allied with other Cretan cities and with Eumenes II of Pergamon, and was destroyed by Gortyn at the end of the third century BC.
Aphrodite Skotia and Leto were worshipped there.
A temple of Rhea was built after the Geometric age.
The temple was linked with a ritual called the ekdysia.
Epimenides the sage may have descended from the people of Phaistos.
After its destruction Phaistos vanished from Cretan history.
Gortyn then extended its power to Matala.
Is Phaistos a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Yes: in 2025 Phaistos was inscribed with Knossos, Malia, Zakros, Zominthos and Kydonia as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Minoan Palatial Centres.
Phaistos is the main palace of the south.
The listing covers six Minoan sites.

The inscription came in 2025.
What is Hagia Triada?
A Minoan site in the Messara about three kilometres from Phaistos, known for its large Royal Villa, the Hagia Triada sarcophagus, the Harvester Vase and about 150 Linear A tablets, the largest cache found at any Minoan site.
It had close political and economic ties to Phaistos.
It may have served the rulers of Phaistos as a retreat.
It lay near the Minoan harbour of Kommos.
The site was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt.
A combined ticket with Phaistos is available.
Licensed guides meet visitors at its entrance.
What is Gortyn?
The Roman capital of Creta et Cyrenaica in the Messara valley, 45 kilometres from Heraklion near Agioi Deka, first inhabited around 7000 BC and the most powerful city of Crete in the Hellenistic era.
The municipality was formed in 2011.
Gortyn dominated the valley from Messara to Levina.
It destroyed Phaistos and took over Matala.
It prospered again under Roman rule.
Day trips stop here on the way to Phaistos.
The city has its own page at Gortyn.
What is Matala?
A beach village 25 kilometres southwest of Phaistos, known for the caves in its cliffs that became a hippie haven in the 1960s and 1970s, and the swim and lunch stop on most Phaistos day trips.

The name is also written Phaestos and Festos.
The Latin form was Phaestus.
The modern municipality is called Faistos.
The tablets show links with Knossos.
Some propose the name also covered Hagia Triada.
Guides explain the name at the entrance.
How does Phaistos compare with Knossos on a tour?
Phaistos is about two thirds the size of Knossos, unreconstructed, quieter and set on a hill over the Messara, while Knossos is larger, partly rebuilt by Evans and far busier, which is why tours pair them as north and south.
Phaistos has the larger theatre area.
Knossos has the famous fresco copies.
Phaistos gives a view of Psiloritis.
Knossos lies close to Heraklion.
Both joined the UNESCO list in 2025.
